Understanding Vertigo

Vertigo is a sensation of dizziness without any accompanying movement. You may experience the feeling of you and your surroundings moving and spinning due to vertigo. Vertigo is a symptom rather than a condition in and of itself, causing difficulty maintaining balance or performing everyday activities. If you are suffering from vertigo, our chiropractor at Health + Healing Chiropractic in Mississauga is here to help.

Vertigo

What Causes Vertigo?

Vertigo is often caused by a problem with your balance within your inner ear. Common conditions that cause vertigo include:

Meniere's disease - Changing pressure and fluid accumulation in the ear due to Meniere's disease can cause vertigo along with hearing loss or ringing ears.

BPPV or benign paroxysmal positional vertigo - BPPV is caused by the accumulation of small calcium particles in the inner ear, which helps maintain your balance. Aging can cause BPPV.

Vestibular neuritis or labyrinthitis - inflammation caused by an infection can lead to this inner ear condition. When an infection causes swelling in the inner ear, it can affect the surrounding nerves that help the body maintain balance, triggering dizziness.

Vertigo is occasionally caused by migraine headaches, injury to the head or neck, medications that affect your ears, stroke, or tumor in your brain.

Symptoms of Vertigo

Symptoms of vertigo vary from patient to patient. However, the most common symptoms of vertigo include:

  • Dizziness
  • Spinning
  • Swaying
  • Lack of balance
  • Feelings of nausea and vomiting
  • Sweating
  • Ringing in the ears
  • Hearing loss
  • Headaches

Treatment for Vertigo

Vertigo can eventually go away on its own. However, when the spells of dizziness and other symptoms associated with vertigo interfere with your day-to-day life, it's essential to get a thorough diagnosis of the root cause. Treatment for vertigo is determined by the underlying cause that is triggering it.

How a Chiropractor Can Diagnose and Treat Vertigo

Symptoms of vertigo such as dizziness, nausea, and ringing in the ears can cause extreme discomfort. Our chiropractor can ease or remove the symptoms of vertigo through chiropractic specific adjustments and exercise therapies. Cervical vertigo, which is usually caused by a neck injury, can be relieved with chiropractic adjustments. In addition, our chiropractor can provide exercise training that will help the vestibular system in its interaction with the brain. We can also review your diet and eating habits to identify other causes of your vertigo.
