Prenatal Chiropractic & Lower Back Pain

Prenatal care

Pregnancy and Lower Back Pain

About half of all pregnant women experience back pain at some point in their pregnancy. During pregnancy, a woman's body undergoes many transformations, including a growing belly, pelvic changes, and postural changes. Her body also produces a hormone known as relaxin which relaxes muscles, joints, and ligaments so that her body can accommodate the baby and prepare for delivery. While all these changes are normal and healthy, they can result in pelvic and spinal misalignment. Those misalignments lead to pain. They can also reduce the amount of space available for the baby to grow. This condition is known as an intrauterine constraint and can be a cause of breech births and create the need for a Caesarean delivery.

Chiropractic care realigns the spine and pelvis. This eliminates lower back pain and sciatica and allows the baby freedom to move into the best position for delivery. Chiropractic care during pregnancy can also stop headaches, reduce nausea during pregnancy, reduce time in labor, and help the nervous system and entire body stay healthy.

Chiropractic care is safe during pregnancy and adjustments are made on a table that is designed to accommodate a larger abdomen. Chiropractors can also demonstrate stretches that will help relieve tension and discomfort. Chiropractic care has been known to prevent early labor in some cases by aligning the spine to allow the baby to move upward. The frequency of treatment required is dependent on each individual woman's needs. Our chiropractor creates customized treatment plans for all of our patients based on the results of their initial examinations.
