Text neck. It’s a term that becoming more popular as more health professionals are recognizing the hazardous effects of cell phone use. What is text neck? Essentially, it’s when an individual dedicates much of their time looking down while using their cell phone that eventually causes serious neck problems.

So what exactly happens to our spine when we tilt our head forward? The average human head weighs 12 pounds, but that number exponentially increases the further our head moves forward and down (see graphic above).  Unfortunately, the weight doesn’t stay at 12 pounds, but instead increases by 5 times!

What are the results? Structurally, this causes severe abnormal neck curve alignment, spinal arthritis and functionally, it causes decreased flexibility. This can cause much pain and suffering. However, this ultimately has a serious effect on the spinal cord causing it to become crushed and may lead to immunity, digestion, concentration, energy, breathing, headaches, migraines, low back problems and menstrual issues.

What can you do to fix and prevent text neck? Here are 5 life-saving strategies:

  1. Bring your phone to eye level and not the other way around.  (tip: tuck both your elbows to the center of your chest to ease arm strain.)

  2. Text with two hands to ensure body symmetry and spinal balance.

  3. Take frequent and long breaks from electronic use.

  4. Stretch your neck by looking up while pulling shoulders & arms back. Hold for 10-20 seconds.

  5. Chiropractors are the only health professionals designed to correct poor spinal alignment, so stay on top of your adjustment schedule to achieve optimal results.
