Bottom’s Up!

Why drinking enough water everyday may still mean you’re dehydrated.

Proper hydration is not just about drinking enough water everyday, but rather having a healthy amount of cellular hydration. Dehydration increases your risk for diseases and advanced aging.  Thus, to ensure you have proper cellular hydration you need to ensure you have enough salts and ions to help with water transfer into your cells.

This is crucial to understand because drinking more water means that you are diluting your body and adding more water to your bloodstream, but not necessarily your cells.

In the past I’ve personally noticed that when I was dehydrated I would have increased muscle tension and like most of us, I thought I needed to drink more water. And usually that did the trick, but there were times when I knew I was well-adjusted and hydrated (or so I thought), but yet still had the tension.

Recently, I had an opportunity to see a naturopath and learn more about how I could be making healthier choices. I learned a lot including proper hydration. This is the simple homemade electrolyte recipe she gave me.

1L of filtered water + ½ cup lemon juice (optional) + 1 tbsp. raw honey + ¼ teasp. sea salt

How much you sweat depends on how much of your homemade electrolyte recipe you should drink. If you plan on exercising and sweating a lot I would plan to drink 1L/day and 1/2L would be sufficient on a regular day with no sweating.

Since implementing this simple recipe into my life, I’ve noticed a lot less tension in my muscles. In addition, proper hydration in the long run will also improve spinal health by increasing disc hydration thus, ensuring maximum spinal function and mobility and ultimately communication between you brain and body!

Note: to calculate how much total water you need per day simply take your body weight in pounds, divide that in half and that’s how many ounces of water you should be drinking per day. For example a 100 lbs individual needs 50 ounces of water per day.
